Aquaculture in your region

Greater Wellington Regional Council

Background

Public response to an Aquaculture Discussion Document in 2003 indicated there was not much interest in pursuing aquaculture in this region. There has been no industry interest shown since that time.

Current status

A full review of the Regional Coastal Plan is due to commence in 2010 and any need for Aquaculture Management Areas (AMAs) will be addressed in that process. Progress to develop and promote sustainable aquaculture (such as through inviting private plan changes to establish AMAs) will depend heavily on the commitment and resources of the aquaculture industry.
