Aquaculture in your region

Taranaki Regional Council

Background

The nature of the Taranaki coast is such that it is not suited to traditional aquaculture activities, because of the very rough seas and high turbidity. At this time, demand for space for aquaculture is limited. For these reasons the council has decided not to go through a council initiated and funded change to the Regional Coastal Plan to identify Aquaculture Management Areas (AMAs).

Changes in technology or in potential species for marine farming could well change the outlook in future. The Taranaki Regional Council is also due to proceed through a Regional Coastal Plan review process which will assist in addressing the issue should it be determined that there is a need to do so.

Current status

The council has undertaken some in-house work that seeks to identify areas that might not be suitable for aquaculture and to map these areas through an 'Aquaculture Management: Constraints Mapping Report'. This work provides useful information for any interested parties on areas that might not be suitable for aquaculture (and conversely areas that may potentially be available). It also places the council in a good position to go further in the future if as appropriate.
