Aquaculture in your region
Environment Southland
Background
While the Southland region has 3100 km of coastline, very little of that is currently being used for or is capable of being used for aquaculture. The marine farming industry was established in Southland in the early 1980s with the development of salmon farms in Big Glory Bay, Stewart Island.
Current status
Current activity that Environment Southland has under way relates to assisting an industry working group in rationalising existing marine farms structures to their actual AMA areas. Off-site and over-size farms issues are being addressed in a shared effort between the council and the local marine farmers.
The council has its Regional Coastal Plan provisions on marine farming being sorted out after a recent Environment Court decision, and as a consequence these provisions of the plan are not yet fully operative.
The council’s approach to new AMAs is that they will not be actively pursuing or investigating new AMA sites. The council is leaving the identification of new areas and sites to the industry itself and will deal with any new proposals through the privately initiated plan change process.
