Aquaculture in your region

Northland Regional Council

Background

Aquaculture may be an opportunity for significant economic growth in Northland. The Northland Regional Council is currently undertaking a plan change to provide for aquaculture – Plan Change 4. Plan Change 4 will set out the way the council intends to manage aquaculture in Northland. It includes policies and rules for managing existing aquaculture and determining how and where new aquaculture is located.

Submitters on Plan Change 4 had the opportunity to speak on behalf of their written submissions at a hearing in November 2007. The hearings panel was made up of two Northland Regional Council councillors and two independent commissioners. At the same hearing, Northland Regional Council staff presented recommended changes to the draft aquaculture planning framework having considered the written submissions.

Current status

The hearings panel has made a decision on the aquaculture planning framework, after considering everything presented to it. The decision was made in April 2008. Twelve appeals have been lodged with the Environment Court.
