Aquaculture in your region

Hawke's Bay Regional Council

Background

In Hawke’s Bay demand for aquaculture space is not great at present and environmental conditions are not thought to be highly suitable for aquaculture activities.

Current status

Currently there are no fully operational marine farms in the Hawke’s Bay region, however, Napier Mussels Ltd have been granted consent to develop a 2,469-ha GreenshellTM approximately 5.5 km offshore from Waipatiki Beach. This area has been identified as an Aquaculture Management Area (AMA). A second AMA has been identified for a much smaller four-ha area near Long Point on the western coast of Mahia Peninsula.
