Pacific oysters are not native to the New Zealand, so possible genetic effects from selective breeding programmes and oyster transfers are not a concern to indigenous marine biodiversity.

Pacific oyster spat are often sourced from outside the region where they are farmed – often from the wild, but sometimes also from hatcheries with selective breeding programmes.
