Greenshell™ Mussels

Greenshell™ mussels is the trade-marked name of farmed native green-lipped mussels.  A New Zealand delicacy for centuries, commercial farming of this species began over 40 years ago.  Since then, the domestic and international demand for this product has grown dramatically.

King Salmon

A number of salmon species were introduced to New Zealand in the 1900s as sport-fish, but only the king, or Chinook, salmon adapted to our environment. Farming of this species began in the 1970s.

Pacific Oysters

Farmers began raising native New Zealand rock oysters on wooden racks in the late 1960's. Around 1970s, the Pacific oyster was accidentally introduced to New Zealand from Asia (possibly on vessel hulls or in their ballast water). By the mid-1970s, Pacific oysters had become the main farm-raised oyster in New Zealand.

Other Species

Commercial interest is growing in pāua (abalone) farming in New Zealand. Other species still in the research or pre-commercial stages include eels, European perch, sea cucumbers, kina, rock lobsters and groper/hāpuka (a wreckfish species).
