Aquaculture in your region

Gisborne District Council

Background

Gisborne has about 250 kilometres of high-energy coastline with 530,000 hectares in the coastal marine area. There are currently no Aquaculture Management Areas (AMAs) or coastal permits for aquaculture in the Gisborne District.

Marine-based aquaculture is a new activity in the Gisborne region with uncertainty about its feasibility and impacts, so the council is adopting a cautious approach to aquaculture planning and regulation.

Current status

The Gisborne District Council sees its role as partnership brokering and facilitating development in the Gisborne region. Progress to develop and promote sustainable aquaculture (such as through inviting private plan changes to establish AMAs) will depend heavily on the commitment and resources of the aquaculture industry.
